You must be a member to attend this event. Membership is free - just click on the JOIN DMA button on the left to sign up. If this is your first time, please bring a printout of the newsletter. It'syour free ticket in! Thanks to Adobe, you don't have to pay to get in!
We'll be around with another meeting on Tuesday, March 17. Although we won't have green beer, there will be beer and wine as usual. Bring your own food coloring!
What's in store this meeting:
• TIPS & TRICKS: More Tips and Tricks from the gurus: Mike Hackett will be talking about some solid VFX and Motion Graphics setups using Trapcode Plugins in Adobe's After Effects. If you don't have Trapcode plugins, check out the REDGIANT SOFTWARE site. (ps: Remember last month's Q&A: Aharon has some video tutorials available now at Red Giant TV.com)
• CHARACTER ANIMATION: Tirade's Gabriel Sabloff will show how he completed a recent show open for Chris Brown. While most members have started to use 3D applications on a regular basis, not nearly as many are creating any character animation. Why not? It's really difficult. To ease the pain of character animation, SmithMicro's POSER PRO allows users to quickly overcome learning curves to start on their way toward full production. Some simple steps on how this massive project was completed
• STARTUP STUDIO: Sergio Cardenas and Peter Martin will come to talk about how they've gotten their new studio off the ground, and some important things to remember whether you're a self starter or a freelance artist. United Front Design has only been in existence for a few months, but they already have some major clients lining up to get their attention.
• DEMO REELS: You have 'em? We wanna see them. Keep them 2.5 minutes or shorter (or Warren will).Don't forget to show your photography and still artwork on our flickr group too!
Hey - we're on Twitter too - are you? We'll follow you. Don't worry about us clogging your feed. I'll only post during the days around meeting week; unless something really tweetworthy comes along. Tweetworthy? Is that a word? Ugh. http://www.twitter.com/dmala

THE DMA\LA WACOM CHALLENGE
6D ART PEN
The 6D Art Pen is cool. It's so cool, I'm wondering if I really should give away my extra pen..... It works in Corel Painter and in MAXON's BodyPaint with really cool effects.
Of course, it works in any other software application that you Wacom Intuos 3 pens work in, including the Finder, but the beauty of this one is that you can pick up multiple instances of color on the same tip - and the tip has an awesome sensitivity - almost wide felt pen-ish... pennish?
This is completely separate from our regular door prize, and open to any DMA\LA member. However, you must be present to win.
There are multiple parts to this.
1) Take a photo of you and your Wacom Intuos 3 tablet. (800x600 max)
2) Take a screengrab or create an image of something you made while using your Wacom Intuos 3 tablet. (800x600px max)
3) Composite text somewhere over your masterpiece, completing the following:
"I love (or hate) my wacom because __________. (your name).
WHAT?! WHY?
A) Well, you're going to post these two images on our FLICKR group*.
B) The first photo proves YOU own an intuos3 or are near one enough to merit the pen. And shows me who you are.
C) The second photo shows your name, so when I pull out the winning printout, I can call your name.
D) Only people who want it will enter - even if it's only one person!
You have until 11:59PM Sunday, March 15 (about a month)
*When you're ready post them to: http://www.flickr.com/groups/dmala/
(only members of this group can see them)
DMALA is now on TWITTER: http://www.twitter.com/dmala Don't worry about clogging your feed. We'll probably only tweet during the week of the meeting, unless something really important comes up! We want to follow you too, to see what you're up to.

The Gallery Theatre at Barnsdall Art Park
4800 Hollywood Boulevard
(between Vermont and Normandie)
Hollywood, CA 90027
Phone: 323.644.6272
* coming South/East on the 101: exit Hollywood, head East
* coming North/West on the 101: exit Vermont, head North, turn left (going West) onto Hollywood
* coming from the 5: exit Los Feliz, head West, turn left (going South) onto
Vermont, turn right (going West) on Prospect, Prospect becomes Hollywood
Enter through the gate on the South side of Hollywood Blvd. just East of the light at Edgemont, or West of the light at New Hampshire (which is just West of where Prospect and Hollywood come together). The theatre is at the top of the hill, adjacent to the art gallery (they have separate entrances).
Parking is free. There is parking at the bottom of the hill, but first try to find a space around the perimeter of the park at the top. Please park closely together, at an angle (regardless of how the parking spaces are painted!) to allow more cars to park. Click here for a PDF map (300k) of the grounds that points out the parking areas and includes other helpful hints.
Wheelchair access (or if you are carrying a lot of gear): Park in the lot next to the Hollyhock house (you will see a handicap parking sign - there are also spaces for loading etc.), come into the theatre entrance, and take the elevator down. There will be space in the front of the theatre for wheelchairs.
Click here for a Google interactive map, including the ability to get directions from your location to this address. There is also a Metro Red Line station at Vermont and Sunset, about a block and a half from the park's entrance.
Before or after the meeting, there is a fine restaurant row on Vermont between Hollywood and Franklin (just around the corner from the park). There are also a number of great ethic eateries along Hollywood.
